Hinduism is the longest continually practiced religion in the world. The history of art in India parallels that longevity. This course will be structured around representations of the main Hindu deities, looking at how each god has been depicted through the ages—from prehistoric to contemporary art. Cycling through art history for each god individually, we will focus first on Vishnu and his multiple avatars. Next will be Shiva, with attention to his various manifestations and rich family life. We will conclude with the Goddess, loving and malevolent, maternal and fierce.
